The study assessed the potential effects of the peroxisome proliferator‐activated receptor‐α (PPARα) agonist ciprofibrate on cardiac and hepatic metabolism in insulin-resistant volunteers. Ten male participants underwent a randomized, double-blind crossover trial, receiving 100 mg/d of ciprofibrate or a placebo for 5 weeks. The results showed that ciprofibrate treatment increased hepatic lipid accumulation and reduced insulin-stimulated hepatic glucose metabolism. However, it did not significantly affect overall insulin sensitivity, cardiac function, or cardiac energy status. Furthermore, skeletal muscle gene expression remained unchanged.
