This study compared the resource utilization and safety outcomes of adult patients with diabetic ketoacidosis (DKA) managed using the Two-Bag method or the traditional One-Bag method. The Two-Bag method was associated with a shorter time to reach a bicarbonate level greater than 18 mmol/L, a reduced number of IV fluid bags used, and a lower incidence of hypokalemia than the One-Bag method. There was also a trend towards a lower incidence of hypoglycemia with the Two-Bag method. These findings suggest that the Two-Bag method may be advantageous for managing DKA in adult ED patients, providing faster resolution of acidosis and potentially better safety outcomes.
