Thiazide-associated hyponatremia increases the risk of major adverse cardiovascular events among elderly

A retrospective study using data from the Health and Welfare Data Science Center evaluated thiazide-associated hyponatremia (TAH) in elderly Taiwanese patients. The TAH group, with over 30 cumulative daily defined doses of thiazide diuretics, exhibited significantly higher rates of major adverse cardiovascular events (MACE) and death compared to the control group. Adjusted hazard ratios indicated a 29% higher risk of MACE, 39% higher risk of all-cause death, and 61% higher risk of stroke in the TAH group, suggesting caution in prescribing thiazides to elderly patients.
