In hASM cells, TNFα (20 ng/mL) altered mitochondrial structure and function, reducing succinate dehydrogenase activity (SDHmax) per mitochondrial volume, especially in perinuclear regions. Using 3D confocal imaging and a concentric shell analysis, researchers found decreased mitochondrial complexity and function under inflammatory conditions, highlighting how inflammation causes spatial mitochondrial dysfunction within individual cells.
