To flat or not to flat? Exploring the impact of flat‐side design on rotary instruments using a comprehensive multimethod investigation

A study compared flat‐side nickel‐titanium rotary instruments to traditional ones. Both had similar spirals and blade direction, but flat ones had inconsistencies in design and phase transformation temperatures. Flat instruments showed better cutting ability but inferior performance in time, rotation, and maximum torque to fracture. No differences were seen in titanium‐to-nickel ratios, angle of rotation, maximum bending, buckling load, preparation time, untouched canal walls, hard tissue debris, or dentine thickness reduction. The study concludes that flat‐side instruments excel in cutting ability but have drawbacks in other mechanical aspects and design consistency.
