Tongue coating microbiome composition reflects disease severity in patients with COVID-19 in Nanjing, China

The study analyzed 16S rRNA gene sequencing from 130 participants. Severe/critical (S-C) & mild/moderate (M) patients showed higher tongue microbiome richness than healthy controls (Con). M & S-C groups displayed decreased Prevotella, Neisseria, Fusobacterium, Alloprevotella, but higher Streptococcus & Rothia. S-C group had greater Pseudomonas, Acinetbacter, Lactobacillus, Corynebacterium, Rothia abundance. The study suggests a potential link between tongue-coating microbiota and COVID-19 severity, paving the way for early condition identification.
