Tongue Stimulation Outperforms Tragus in HRV Improvement

A study compared the effects of trigeminal neurostimulation applied to the tongue and tragus on heart rate variability (HRV) in 80 healthy young women. The TUD group, which received ULFTENS stimulation on the tongue's mucosa, showed significant increases in HRV parameters, indicating vagal activation. These effects persisted even after stimulation ended. In contrast, the Tragus group, where stimulation was applied bilaterally near the tragus, did not show significant HRV improvement and even displayed a reverse trend. No adverse effects were reported in either group, making tongue stimulation a promising method for enhancing HRV and potentially reducing arousal circuit activity.
