Trans-Perineal Laser Ablation for High-Risk BPO Patients with Severe LUTS

A recent study investigated the Trans-Perineal Laser Ablation of the prostate (TPLA®) as a surgical treatment for high-risk Benign Prostatic Obstruction (BPO) patients. The study enrolled 40 elderly individuals with severe comorbidities. TPLA® was performed under local anesthesia, allowing same-day discharge. Post-operatively, there was a notable reduction in prostate volumes and an improvement in the International Prostate Symptom Score (IPSS). A significant achievement was the successful removal of permanent bladder catheters in 56.5% of cases. However, 47.5% of patients encountered surgical complications within 90 days, with most being of grade I or II, according to the Clavien-Dindo classification. This study concluded that Trans-Perineal Laser Ablation is a feasible, safe, and effective minimally invasive surgical technique for elderly, high-risk BPO patients with severe obstruction.
