Transdiagnostic risk of mental disorders in offspring of affected parents

Offspring of parents with mental disorders face significantly increased risks of developing mental health issues themselves, extending to disorders beyond those of their parents, according to a comprehensive meta-analysis. This study analyzed data from 211 independent studies, encompassing over 3 million offspring of parents with various mental disorders. Offspring's relative risk (RR) and lifetime risk of developing any mental disorder were notably elevated. Additionally, there were substantial transdiagnostic associations between parental and offspring mental disorders. This study highlights the urgent need for targeted prevention and genetic counseling for these at-risk individuals.
