A randomized trial compared the effectiveness and safety of heart transplants from donors after circulatory death versus brain death. The study involved 180 adult heart transplant candidates, with 90 receiving hearts from circulatory-death donors and 90 receiving hearts from brain-death donors. The analysis included 166 transplant recipients, with 80 receiving circulatory-death hearts and 86 receiving brain-death hearts. The study found that the risk-adjusted 6-month survival rate was 94% for circulatory-death heart recipients compared to 90% for brain-death heart recipients. There were no significant differences in serious adverse events associated with the heart graft at 30 days after transplantation. The findings suggest that circulatory-death heart transplants are not inferior to standard-care brain-death heart transplants in terms of survival.
