Trends and Outcomes of Cardiogenic Shock in Patients With End-Stage Renal Disease: Insights From USRDS Database

A retrospective cohort study analyzed data from the United States Renal Data System database (2006-2019) to understand cardiogenic shock (CS) in end-stage renal disease (ESRD) patients. The incidence of CS doubled during this period (from 275 to 578 per 100,000 patients). The use of intra-aortic balloon pumps decreased, while percutaneous ventricular assist device and extracorporeal membrane oxygenation usage increased. Index mortality declined from 54.1% to 40.8%, and 1-year all-cause mortality decreased from 63% to 61.8%, but these trends were not statistically significant. Older age, peripheral vascular disease, diabetes, and time on dialysis were predictors of higher index mortality.
