A recent meta-analysis examined the risk of hepatic decompensation and hepatocellular carcinoma in individuals with non-alcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD) with and without type 2 diabetes. The analysis included data from six cohorts in the USA, Japan, and Turkey, comprising a total of 2016 participants. Results showed that individuals with type 2 diabetes had a higher risk of hepatic decompensation and hepatocellular carcinoma compared to those without diabetes. This association remained significant even after adjusting for confounding factors. The findings emphasize the importance of diabetes as a risk factor for severe liver complications in people with NAFLD.
