Ultra-Processed Foods Tied to Sarcopenia in Chronic Kidney Disease

The study explores the link between ultra-processed foods (UPFs), protein-energy wasting (PEW), and sarcopenia in chronic kidney disease (CKD) patients in Iran. Analyzing 110 CKD patients, the study found no significant association initially. However, after adjusting for confounders, a notable increase in the odds of sarcopenia was observed in those with higher UPF intake. The findings suggest a positive correlation between UPF consumption and sarcopenia in CKD patients, emphasizing the potential benefit of reducing UPF intake to lower the risk of sarcopenia.
