Umbilical cord cysts: Classification, diagnosis, prognosis, and pregnancy recommendations

A recent study assessed the classification, diagnosis, prognosis, and management of umbilical cord cysts (UCCs). These cysts, found during prenatal ultrasounds, result from abnormal embryonic development. They are either pseudocysts or true UCCs, caused by focal edema or degeneration of Wharton jelly or embryonic remnants, respectively. Due to their rarity, clinical guidance is lacking. The research aimed to enhance understanding among obstetricians and pediatricians.
