Researchers have found that the proteins necessary for the entry of the SARS-CoV-2 virus into cells, such as the ACE2 receptor and cofactors TMPRSS2 and NRP1, are expressed in the normal kidney tubule tissue and renal cell carcinoma (RCC) cells. In a study, the authors exposed RCC cells to SARS-CoV-2, which demonstrated evidence of viral replication and cytopathogenic effects. The findings suggest a link between RCC and COVID-19 and could lead to possible therapeutic targets. Another study surveyed over 300 SARS-CoV-2 infection-related genes in patients with RCC to generate a prognostic risk model based on expression of five differentially expressed genes between malignant and normal renal tissue.
