Uncovering the Genetic Link between Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease and Idiopathic Pulmonary Fibrosis

The study investigated the regulation of the FAM13A protein in response to noxious stimuli such as cigarette smoke, influenza, and naphthalene. The study found that activated protein kinase B (AKT) phosphorylates FAM13A and mediates its degradation, enabling cell proliferation after injury. FAM13A is a susceptibility protein in the pathogenesis of both chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) and idiopathic pulmonary fibrosis (IPF). The study suggests that the AKT pathway might be the common link between FAM13A activity in both IPF and COPD pathogenesis and that FAM13A might be implicated in lung development and maturation.
