Uninsured and Not Immune — Closing the Vaccine-Coverage Gap for Adults

Uninsured and Not Immune — Closing the Vaccine-Coverage Gap for Adults

The Biden administration has introduced the Health and Human Services Bridge Access Program to provide free Covid-19 vaccines to uninsured individuals until 2024. This temporary program aims to promote equitable vaccine access and will distribute over $1 billion of Covid-19 funds to state and local health departments, clinics, and pharmacies. The proposal for a federal Vaccines for Adults (VFA) program, similar to the Vaccines for Children (VFC) program, has also been made to provide free access to recommended routine vaccines for uninsured adults. Expanding Medicare and Medicaid reimbursement to cover routine vaccines for adults is a step toward universal access, but uninsured adults still face limitations. A comprehensive VFA program could bridge the vaccine-coverage gap and improve access to safe and cost-effective vaccines.
