Universal cCMV Screening Using Newborn DBS Proves Feasible

A population-based newborn screening program for congenital cytomegalovirus (cCMV) using dried blood spots (DBS) was found to be effective and feasible. In this study, 551,034 infants were screened, with 0.13% testing positive for cCMV. Of these, 601 were confirmed infected, and 16% were symptomatic. Many of these infants benefitted from early identification and audiologic surveillance, suggesting universal DBS-based cCMV screening could be a successful public health approach.
