Unraveling the Impact of Functional Somatic Syndromes: A Critical Look at Hip and Knee Arthroplasty Outcomes

A recent systematic review investigated the impact of functional somatic syndromes (FSSs) on outcomes following hip and knee arthroplasty. Analyzing 28 studies encompassing 768,909 patients, with 378,384 having an FSS, the findings revealed that patients with FSSs experienced inferior patient-reported outcome measures (PROMs), prolonged postoperative opioid use, higher rates of medical and surgical complications, and increased revision after arthroplasty. This underscores the need for an enhanced understanding of biopsychosocial determinants influencing outcomes in joint arthroplasty and emphasizes the importance of future studies addressing these factors.
