A multi-institute study sheds light on the underreported diagnostic performance of urine cytology in detecting renal cell carcinomas compared to upper urinary tract lesions. Out of 1147 cases, renal urothelial/squamous carcinomas showed higher detection rates than renal cell carcinomas. Urine samples collected from cystoscopy or percutaneous nephrostomy exhibited better performance. Factors like male sex, specific histology, and involvement indicators correlated with increased detection rates. However, larger lesion size and higher urine volume did not improve detection. The study highlights the need for improved diagnostic methods for renal cell carcinomas.
