Urine α-Synuclein Aggregates as Biomarkers for Parkinson’s Disease

Using surface-based fluorescence intensity distribution analysis (sFIDA), researchers detected elevated α-synuclein aggregates in the urine of patients with Parkinson’s disease and isolated REM sleep behavior disorder. The test showed high sensitivity (83–89%) but moderate specificity (62–65%). These findings suggest that urine-based α-synuclein measurement could be a non-invasive biomarker for early detection and diagnosis of Parkinson’s and related synucleinopathies.
