
This study assessed whether certain clinical features and the response to ipratropium bromide nasal spray (IBNS) could help predict the presence or absence of cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) rhinorrhea in patients with unilateral clear thin rhinorrhea (UCTR). The researchers conducted a prospective cohort study, testing nasal fluid for beta-2 transferrin and prescribing 0.06% IBNS to all UCTR patients. They found significant associations between IBNS response, positional rhinorrhea worsening, body-mass index ≥30, and the presence of CSF rhinorrhea. IBNS response demonstrated high sensitivity and specificity, making it an excellent screening tool for excluding CSF rhinorrhea in UCTR patients.
