A study has found that external color Doppler ultrasonography is highly effective in monitoring transferred free jejunal flaps during and after surgery. The technique showed a 100% success rate in detecting arterial thrombosis during surgery, while post-surgery monitoring using color Doppler ultrasound revealed a 100% positive predictive value for detecting flap viability. The wiggling movement sign was particularly useful in identifying flap failure, enabling prompt salvage surgery. These findings highlight the utility of color Doppler ultrasonography in monitoring free jejunal flaps. This study provides valuable insights for surgeons performing pharyngo-laryngectomy with flap reconstruction.
