
The study investigated the use of abdominal ultrasound (AUS) in the diagnosis of necrotizing enterocolitis (NEC) in cases where abdominal radiography (AXR) is equivocal to reduce unnecessary antibiotic use in neonates. The retrospective study of 54 infants found that AUS demonstrated the presence of pneumatosis in 41% of patients and the absence of pneumatosis in 57%, with all patients with pneumatosis treated for NEC. Patients without pneumatosis on AUS received a significantly shorter duration of antibiotics compared to those with pneumatosis. The study concluded that AUS is a valuable tool for evaluating the presence or absence of pneumatosis in equivocal AXR, reducing unnecessary treatment and antibiotic usage.
