Vegetarian diets on anthropometric, metabolic and blood pressure outcomes in people with overweight and obesity: a systematic review and meta-analysis of randomized controlled trials

This study aimed to determine whether vegetarian diets (VDs) have favorable effects on people with overweight and obesity. The study analyzed randomized controlled trials comparing VDs with omnivore diets. Out of nine trials involving 1628 participants, VDs were found to decrease weight and glucose levels but did not significantly affect waist circumference, body mass index (BMI), hip circumference, HbA1c, insulin, systolic or diastolic blood pressure. The quality of evidence was generally very low, indicating uncertainty. While VDs might aid weight and glucose reduction, larger trials are needed to better understand their impact on metabolic and anthropometric factors in overweight and obese individuals.
