A recent study comparing outcomes of veno-arterial extracorporeal life support (VA-ECLS) for acute pulmonary embolism (PE) versus other indications found significant differences. Analyzing data from 26,583 patients, researchers discovered that those on VA-ECLS for acute PE had a 78% higher likelihood of surviving to discharge compared to other indications. Acute PE patients also experienced fewer cardiovascular and renal complications but had higher rates of clots and mechanical issues. These findings suggest better survival outcomes for acute PE patients on VA-ECLS but with notable mechanical risks.
