Invasive pulmonary aspergillosis (IPA) has become more prevalent in ICU settings during recent influenza H1N1 and COVID-19 pandemics. This form of IPA associated with viral infections (VAPA) differs in pathogenicity and presentation in immunocompromised patients. This retrospective study confirmed a high incidence of proven VAPA in patients with influenza (29%) and COVID-19 (26%). Mycological evidence of Aspergillus in respiratory samples represented true infection in more than half of the cases, supporting the use of consensus criteria for diagnosis.
