Visual function in adults born preterm with very low birth weight—A two‐country birth cohort study

This study aimed to examine the visual function and vision-related general health in adults born preterm with very low birth weight (VLBW) in their 30s-40s. The researchers recruited 137 VLBW adults and 158 term-born controls from two birth cohorts. Various measurements were taken, including refraction, visual acuity, contrast sensitivity, visual fields, intraocular pressure, and self-reported vision-related health status. The results showed that VLBW adults had lower visual acuity scores and contrast sensitivity thresholds compared to controls. They also scored lower in vision-related health status. Refraction, visual fields, and intraocular pressure were similar between the groups. The study suggests that lower visual function and vision-related health could be long-term consequences of prematurity and VLBW in this age group. The underlying mechanisms require further investigation.
