New research suggests that the microbiome in the nasopharynx of patients with nasopharyngeal carcinoma (NPC) undergoing chemoradiotherapy is correlated with the severity of oral mucositis (OM). Results showed distinct microbial signatures in the nasopharynx, which varied between patients and were associated with OM severity and quality of life. These findings indicate that the nasopharyngeal microbiome could serve as a noninvasive biomarker for OM susceptibility and potential target for preventing chemoradiation-induced OM in NPC patients.
