The study aimed to evaluate whether weight gain prevention interventions can promote ideal cardiovascular health (CVH) in young adults. The study involved 599 participants aged 18 to 35 years with a BMI between 21.0 and 30.9 kg/m2. They were randomly assigned to one of two interventions (self-regulation with large or small changes) or a self-guided control group. After a period of two years, both intervention groups showed significant improvements in the number of ideal CVH components met compared to the control group. Participants in the interventions were more likely to improve their CVH and less likely to decline compared to the control group. The study suggests that interventions targeting multiple domains of CVH may yield even better outcomes.
