This study investigated the relationship between exposure to perfluorinated alkylate substances (PFAS) and weight gain in a dietary intervention trial. Participants who had previously lost weight were put on a specific diet for at least 26 weeks, and their plasma samples were analyzed for PFAS concentrations. The results showed that higher levels of PFAS, specifically perfluorooctanoic acid (PFOA) and perfluorohexanesulfonic acid (PFHxS), were associated with greater weight gain, independent of diet and sex. The weight changes associated with PFAS exposure were larger than the average changes attributed to the different diets. The study suggests that obesogenic PFAS may contribute to the obesity epidemic by causing weight gain.
