WHO releases new list of essential diagnostics; new recommendations for hepatitis E virus tests, personal use glucose meters

The World Health Organization (WHO) has released the 2023 Essential Diagnostics List (EDL), featuring crucial in vitro diagnostics (IVD) to aid countries in making informed national diagnostic choices. Notably, this year's list marks the inclusion of tests for hepatitis E virus (HEV) and personal use of glucose monitoring devices for diabetes management. In line with the WHO's commitment to enhancing global diagnostics capacity, the Essential Diagnostics List serves as a policy framework for countries to expand access to vital diagnostic tools. This development aligns with the recent WHA 76.5 resolution on strengthening diagnostics capacity, urging Member States to establish national diagnostics strategies and essential diagnostics lists based on the WHO model.
