WHO Unveils Startling Statistic: One in Ten Babies Born Premature, Significantly Affecting Health and Survival

A Lancet study by WHO, UNICEF, and the London School of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine reports that 13.4 million babies were born prematurely in 2020, representing 1 in 10 live births. Preterm birth remains a leading cause of child mortality and increases the risk of severe illnesses, disabilities, and adult chronic conditions. Notably, a global reduction rate of only 0.14% was seen. Urgent investment in preterm baby care and maternal health is imperative to improve childhood survival, focusing on quality healthcare during pregnancy. The study underscores the importance of quality antenatal care and early ultrasound scans in addressing preterm births.
