
Late-onset acute respiratory distress syndrome (ARDS), occurring more than 48 hours after ICU admission, is associated with higher mortality, but the underlying molecular targets are unclear. Researchers investigated the WNT gene family's associations with late-onset ARDS and 28-day survival. ARDS patients' genetic, epigenetic, transcriptional, and protein data were analyzed. A genetic score based on eight SNPs was linked to an increased risk for late-onset ARDS and decreased survival. The WNT9A gene was identified as a significant factor influencing immunity and fibrosis, explaining different outcomes between early- and late-onset ARDS. This finding may offer insights into ARDS treatment strategies.
