Doctors at Boston Children’s Hospital and Brigham and Women’s Hospital have successfully performed brain surgery on a foetus in the womb in order to repair potentially deadly damage to its vessels. The patient was suffering from a rare pre-natal condition known as Vein of Galen malformation, which causes high-pressure blood arteries to connect to veins in the brain. In normal development, the arteries should connect to smaller capillaries. The surgery was carried out at 34 weeks using ultrasound and the unnamed child was delivered two days later by normal birth. It was the first case in an ongoing clinical trial, overseen by the US Food and Drug Administration.
