A recent study reveals that the number of people living with diabetes in India has surpassed 101 million, compared to 70 million in 2019. While the rate of diabetes seems to be stabilizing in some developed states, it is increasing at an alarming rate in others, necessitating urgent state-specific interventions. The study also highlights that approximately 136 million individuals, or 15.3% of the population, have prediabetes. Goa, Puducherry, and Kerala show the highest prevalence of diabetes, while states like Uttar Pradesh, Madhya Pradesh, Bihar, and Arunachal Pradesh are projected to experience a significant rise in diabetes cases in the coming years. The study emphasizes the need for preventive measures tailored to the specific circumstances of each state to address the varying prevalence and associated health complications such as hypertension, dyslipidemia, obesity, and related risks of cardiac arrest, stroke, and kidney disease.
