A Case Report on Acute Emphysematous Epiglottitis

Epiglottitis is a potentially life-threatening upper respiratory tract bacterial infection, usually seen in unvaccinated children. However, adult cases are growing following the Haemophilus Influenza B (HiB) vaccine. Although epiglottitis can present as an abscess, few cases report the formation of an emphysematous abscess. Moreover, the bacterial etiology of such infections is not well understood. This study presents a case of acute emphysematous epiglottis in an adult patient managed with fiberoptic intubation, drainage, and culture of the abscess.
