A combination of computed tomography scan and ultrasound provides optimal detection of cervical lymph node metastasis in papillary thyroid carcinomas: A systematic review and meta‐analysis

This meta-analysis evaluated the diagnostic accuracy of computed tomography (CT), ultrasound (US), and combined CT + US in detecting lymph node metastasis (LNM) in patients with papillary thyroid carcinoma (PTC). It included 24 studies with 7,902 patients and 15,014 lymph nodes. The findings revealed that dual CT + US imaging had higher sensitivity for overall neck region LNM detection than CT or US alone. However, US alone exhibited higher specificity. In the central neck region, both CT and CT + US had higher sensitivity than the US alone. For lateral LNM, CT + US imaging showed higher sensitivity than CT or US alone. The study concluded that dual CT + US imaging was the most effective for overall LNM detection, while CT was preferable for central LNM detection.
