A comparison between hyaluronic acid and other single ingredient eye drops for dry eye

The article discusses the use of hyaluronic acid (HA) as a treatment for dry eye disease (DED) and its role as a comparator for other topical DED treatments. The study aims to evaluate the literature on isolated active ingredients directly compared to HA in the treatment of DED. A literature search was conducted, and 23 studies met the inclusion criteria, with 17 different ingredients compared to HA treatment. Most measures showed no significant difference between treatments, suggesting either equivalency or underpowered studies. Only two ingredients appeared in more than two studies, carboxymethyl cellulose, which is equivalent to HA treatment, and Diquafosol, which appears superior. The article highlights the need for well-designed studies to determine an evidence-based standard for HA treatment as a comparator.
