A mixed-methods study to investigate feasibility and acceptability of an early warning score for preterm infants

A study in Kenya implemented a neonatal early-warning score (EWS) in three newborn units to assess its feasibility and acceptability. Vital signs were recorded on the EWS triggering interventions per local guidelines. Data from 465 preterm and/or low birthweight infants were collected, with 94% having the EWS completed at least once. Completion rates were highest on admission day (93%) and consistent across shifts. 15% of vital signs prompted escalation to senior staff. Health professionals favored the EWS but noted poor staffing as a key implementation barrier. Ratios varied widely, indicating staffing challenges across shifts.
