Adipose Tissue Dysfunction in Endometriosis

Endometriosis, a gynecological condition marked by ectopic endometrium-like tissue, often causes pelvic pain and infertility. Emerging evidence reveals its systemic effects, including increased risks of cancer, cardiovascular, and autoimmune diseases, alongside neurological disturbances such as neuropathic hyperalgesia. While estrogen's role in ectopic tissue growth is established, adipose tissue-secreted molecules may also influence endometriosis progression and pain. Despite low body mass index in endometriosis patients, their adipokine secretion pattern resembles that of obesity, suggesting dysfunctional adipose tissue. This dysfunction, linked to enhanced metabolism and unregulated browning, may affect weight control and pain processing pathways. These findings propose a novel perspective on the metabolic and systemic dimensions of endometriosis.
