Age But Not Menopausal Status Is Linked to Lower Resting Energy Expenditure

This study investigates the association between aging, menopausal status, and fat-free mass- and fat mass-adjusted resting energy expenditure (REEadj) in women. Analyzing 120 participants across age groups and menopausal statuses, the research reveals a decline in REEadj with age before late adulthood, even when partially controlling for genetic factors. Contrary to expectations, menopausal status does not seem to contribute to this decline in REEadj, challenging previous assumptions about the impact of menopause on energy expenditure.
