Age-Related Increase in Oral Hypofunction Linked to Physical Function

This pilot study investigates the prevalence of oral hypofunction (OHF) and its correlation with physical function across different age groups. A total of 155 healthy adults, aged 22–89 years, were assessed for OHF using measures such as oral hygiene, lip-tongue motor function (LTMF), and maximum occlusal force (MOF). The results show that OHF prevalence was significantly higher in older adults (≥65 years) compared to younger (20–39 years) and middle-aged (40–64 years) groups. Measures of oral hygiene and LTMF correlated moderately with age. Furthermore, hand grip strength (HGS) was strongly associated with maximum tongue pressure (MTP) and LTMF, indicating a link between oral and physical function. These findings suggest that oral health declines with age, particularly after 65, with potential impacts on frailty and physical function.
