A study aimed to assess the reading levels of patient education materials in pediatric otolaryngology and utilize artificial intelligence (AI) to improve accessibility. Materials from the American Academy of Otolaryngology-Head and Neck Surgery (AAO-HNS) and seven children's hospitals were evaluated using the Flesch-Kincaid calculator. Initially, AAO-HNS materials averaged a readability level of 10.71 ± 0.71. After employing ChatGPT to convert these to a fifth-grade reading level, the average grade level decreased to 7.9 ± 1.18 (P < .01). Comparatively, the average level of materials from the seven hospitals was 9.32 ± 1.82, which ChatGPT reduced to 7.68 ± 1.12 (P = .0598). Only one institution met the recommended sixth-grade reading level. Findings indicate that while AI can lower reading levels, it does not consistently achieve levels below recommendations for all materials.
