The All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS) has opened its first skin bank in the burns and plastic surgery block to aid patients with major burns. This facility, the second of its kind in the city, offers cadaveric skin grafting, increasing survival rates from 50% to 70% for patients with over 50% burn injuries. The skin is harvested within six hours of the donor's death, stored in glycerol containers, and can be preserved for up to five years. The donated skin undergoes testing for diseases before being used for grafting.
