Air pollution exposure is associated with rhinitis in older US adults via specific immune mechanisms

The study investigated the association between air pollution (specifically PM2.5) and rhinitis in older adults, as well as the role of immune mechanisms in this relationship. Cross-sectional data from a nationally representative study of older adults were analyzed, and PM2.5 exposure estimates were generated using spatiotemporal models. Rhinitis was defined based on medication use, and cytokine clusters were identified to determine their role in the relationship. The study found that long-term PM2.5 exposure was associated with rhinitis, and the presence of specific cytokines (IL-3, IL-12, and IFN-γ) strengthened this association. These immune pathways could potentially be targeted for therapeutic purposes.
