
The study compared pulmonary function between 56 PiZZ individuals and 66 age-matched PiMM controls. PiZZ individuals had significantly lower VA/TLC ratio (p=0.004), higher RV (p<0.001), and RV/TLC ratio (p=0.001). Ever-smokers in the PiZZ group showed signs of hyperinflation with higher TLC (p=0.025) and RV (p=0.003). No significant differences were found between never-smoking PiZZ and PiMM individuals, except for RV/TLC ratio (p=0.026).
