A randomized clinical trial conducted in Spain assessed the efficacy and safety of anakinra (an interleukin-1 inhibitor) in treating severe COVID-19 pneumonia with hyperinflammation. The study involved 179 adult patients and found that anakinra did not prevent the need for mechanical ventilation or reduce mortality risk when compared to standard of care alone. The study concluded that anakinra's efficacy and safety in treating severe COVID-19 pneumonia with hyperinflammation remain unclear.
