Anion Gap Linked to Increased 28-Day Mortality in Infective Endocarditis

A retrospective cohort study of 449 critically ill patients with infective endocarditis found that elevated serum anion gap (AG) levels on ICU admission were significantly associated with increased 28-day mortality. The unadjusted hazard ratio (HR) was 1.13 (95% CI: 1.09–1.18, p < 0.001), and the association remained significant after adjusting for confounders (adjusted HR 1.07; 95% CI: 1.02–1.13; p = 0.003). Patients in the highest AG quartile had a more than twofold increased mortality risk. These findings highlight AG as a valuable prognostic marker in IE patients.
