Antenatal Iron Adherence Low in SSA

A study using data from 35 sub-Saharan African (SSA) countries revealed a high prevalence (65.1%) of non-compliance with antenatal iron supplementation among pregnant women. Non-adherence was associated with factors such as rural residence, low household wealth, lack of mass media access, late or infrequent antenatal care, employment, and husband's illiteracy. Conversely, older maternal age correlated with better compliance. The study underscores the need for targeted interventions, including community-based supplement distribution, mass media campaigns, and health education programs, to improve adherence rates and combat anemia during pregnancy.
